MEAGHAN BUISSON (#10):
"Meaghan
Buisson lives by these words: ‘Dream, believe, achieve.’ She first learned
inline skating at the age of 19, and quickly skated her way to the top. In
2004, she became the first Canadian to compete on the World Inline Cup circuit
and to win a major international event. Then her world fell apart – during a
practice session the day before the World Championships in Abruzzo, Italy,
Buisson collided with another skater and suffered a severe concussion. She was
flown back to Canada where doctors said she would likely never skate
competitively again.

Throughout the long months of recovery, Buisson never gave up hope. In
fact, while recovering from her injuries, she sought treatment to tackle and
beat another problem – her 13-year battle with eating disorders. By 2005,
Buisson was in good health and back on her skates. In 2006, she was in top
form again. At the Canadian Inline National Championships, she broke the
world record for the fastest solo marathon, skating 26.2 miles in only
seventy-eight minutes!
A bilingual Canadian, Meaghan speaks
publicly about
eating disorders, explaining “As both an athlete and eating disorder
survivor, I feel as though it's as much my obligation as it is a privilege
to try to make a difference in the world. If, by speaking out against
eating disorders, what I say helps even one person, it’s worth it. The
question for me is never ‘why am I doing this?’; only ‘how can I not?’" |

Buisson
is a true Canadian hero. She has achieved success through her hard work and
her unbreakable spirit while selflessly making time time to speak to young
people, motivating them to strive for success, celebrate their differences,
and embrace healthy life choices.
