Meaghan Buisson - Results

2007/8

LONG TRACK ICE SPEED SKATING

  • FALL WORLD CUP TRIALS (October) - Calgary, Alberta (tore hamstring)

    • 9th - 1500 m (skated personal best time)
    • 8th - 3000 m (skated personal best time)
    • 1000 m - did not skate due to injury
    • 500 m - did not skate due to injury

"Some things happen for a reason.  Others, however, are best left as circumstance, misfortune, or plain bad luck.  As I lay face down on a table feeling the creep of hands across my body, objectifying limbs from personal possessions into foreign objects in need of repair, my tears mingled with the stupefied confusion of my thoughts. 'How,' I wondered, 'is it physically possible for one’s back and gluts to be so powerful – and so incredibly tight - to tear one’s own hamstring?'  The answer, as I’m now learning, comes in the form of words like “excessive tensile force” and “corresponding nerve impingement”.  But that night, just hours before the start of the Canadian Long Track Fall World Cup Trials, all it meant was I had to pick up the phone and call my coach."

Excerpt from "Broken Wing", 27 Oct 07

  • CAN-AM #1 (November)- Calgary, Alberta (raced w/ torn hamstring and concussion)

    • 6th - 5000 m (skated personal best time)
    • 6th - 3000 m (skated personal best time)
    • 8th - 1500 m (skated personal best time)

"I can’t change the realities of these past few months.  But I can give thanks it’s happened NOW – where there is still time to heal, with years – not days – before the 2010 Olympic Trials.  I can give thanks for my coach.  I can feel gratitude for everyone across these past few weeks who has shown such an incredible belief in my ability on skates – and capacity to return injury-free.  And through injury, I can choose to practice skills at which I am admittedly weak; things like patience, mindfulness, and maintaining a better balance in my life.  There's no denying this isn't the season for which I hoped (and expected) back in September.  Am I upset?  Oh yes.  Am I disappointed?  Absolutely.  Do I still wish - every single day - to be back skating injury-free?  Of course.  And I will be... but right now, the first step, simply, is to heal.  Bring it on."

Excerpt from "Determined to Heal", 15 Dec 07

Meaghan's hamstring tear was later determined to have resulted in a 70-80% loss of strength and significant muscle atrophy.  Following Can-Am, she focussed the remainder of the season on healing.  After many long hours of physio in Saskatoon, she returned to Calgary in June 2008; where she is now training injury-free.
